UCEA Statement on the massacre in Orlando, Florida

June 17th, 2016 by

UCEA is devastated by the massacre in Orlando. As scholars committed to the improvement of educational leadership and policy that supports the learning, development, and safety of ALL children, we mourn this incomprehensible attack on the LGBTQ community. This tragedy, among others that have occurred in schools, workplaces, and houses of worship, is rooted in hatred and xenophobia. They also challenge us to question our roles as professors, researchers, and community members in creating a peaceful and more just world. It falls on educational leaders everywhere to create safe spaces for marginalized youth in and out of schools. We ask our members to reach out to their local schools and communities to assist in efforts to help young people and educators make sense of this tragedy. As an organization, we are committed to social justice and to breaking down the beliefs, institutional practices, and policies that enable such tragedies to occur.  We will continue to support socially just leadership practices across the educational spectrum, to ensure that bigotry will not win out.
