Executive Director Position Announcement


Formed in 1954, the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) is a consortium of nearly 100 higher education institutions committed to advancing the preparation and practice of educational leaders for the benefit of schools and children around the world. UCEA fulfills this purpose by (a) promoting, sponsoring, and disseminating research on the essential problems of schooling and leadership practice, (b) improving the preparation and professional development of educational leaders and professors, and (c) positively influencing local, state, and national educational policies. The UCEA Executive Director leads the organization under the guidance of the UCEA Executive Committee and is responsible for leading a team of five full-time professional staff members, seven graduate assistants, a senior associate director, and seven associate directors. In addition, the Executive Director also manages an annual budget of approximately US$1 million dollars. Externally, the Executive Director serves as UCEA’s principal spokesperson to a variety of stakeholders, such as policymakers, researchers, political leaders, professors, educators, and foundations.

The Executive Director oversees the daily operations of the organization by: (a) providing guidance to the staff team in the strategic development and implementation of all programs; (b) overseeing financial, human resource, and grants management; (c) developing, ensuring and maintaining a diversified funding stream to support program implementation; (d) helping to lead development and fundraising efforts; and e) working closely with the UCEA Executive Committee.

We seek a highly-motivated individual who demonstrates:

  2. Awareness and knowledge of the educational policy realm and political landscape;
  3. The capacity to effectively interface with stakeholders to position UCEA as an influential resource and partner;
  4. A track record of effective and strategic planning, administration, personnel, and fiscal management;
  5. The ability to lead through periods of change and innovation;
  6. A commitment to and engagement in supporting and leveraging diversity, equity, and inclusion in education;
  7. Experience developing programs and working with others to realize innovative ideas;
  8. A commitment to quality leadership preparation;
  9. A deep appreciation of the role of research in supporting practice, policy, and program development; and
  10. Effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Required Background/Experience

  • Doctoral degree in educational leadership and/or policy or other professional degree in a closely-related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years in a leadership, management, mentoring or policy position, preferably in a non-profit or educational organization.
  • A distinguished record of professional achievement and scholarship in educational leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with non-profit organizations.
  • Related advanced degrees or certifications are also desirable.
  • Experience with multiple social media platforms and technology platforms.

Travel is required.

Location: UCEA Headquarters has been hosted by a variety of universities throughout its history. The current host institution is the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA.

Compensation: Competitive based on experience
