UCEA Proudly Announces the Keynote Addresses at the 2017 Convention!

Social Justice Keynote Featuring Dr. Cecilia Fierro

Dr. Cecilia Fierro is a national research professor at Universidad Iberoamericana Leon. Her greatest academic concern for over three decades has been to strengthen teacher´s endeavor and power of action. 

Her books, adopted by the Public Educational System in Mexico, have been used in every public school since 1990 reaching over 130,000 teachers in every corner of Mexico. 

Dr. Fierro was named the 2016 Brock International Prize in Education Laureate for her significant contributions to the field of education, including work alongside teachers and school leaders to develop practices that address needs of marginalized children, and build democratic schools in rural and impoverished neighborhoods across Mexico. 

She has been a relentless advocate for marginalized children and the teachers and school directors who work on their behalf.

Mitstifer Lecture featuring Will Richardson

Will Richardson has spent the last dozen years developing an international reputation as a leading thinker and writer about the intersection of social online learning networks and education. 

Richardson is one of a handful of original education bloggers and his work has appeared in numerous journals, newspapers, and magazines such as Ed Leadership, District Administration, Education Week, The New York Times and English Journal. Richardson was recognized by the New York Times as a “trendsetter in education” for his use of blogs in the classroom.

Having spent 22-years as a public school teacher and technology administrator, Richardson is an outspoken advocate for change in schools and classrooms in the context of the diverse new learning opportunities that the Web and other technologies offer.  In 2017, he was named one of 100 global “Changemakers in Education” by the Finnish site HundrED. 

Richardson’s guiding focus has been to help schools and educators make sense of what’s happening in terms of technology and learning, and to help them forge a path forward.

Presidential Address featuring Dr. April Peters-Hawkins

UCEA President April L. Peters-Hawkins is Associate Department Chair and Associate Professor of Educational Administration in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Houston. She earned an MA and PhD in Educational Policy and Leadership from The Ohio State University, an MSW from Columbia University, and

a BS in Education from Northwestern University. She has worked in the K-12 context as a middle school teacher, a school social worker, dean of students and a high school principal. Dr. Peters-Hawkins served 4 years as a consultant for the Institute for Student Achievement

in the Atlanta Public Schools, where her work specifically focused on providing professional learning and support to school leaders, leadership teams, and classroom teachers in implementing small school reform models in select high schools in the district. Dr. Peters- Hawkins has provided professional learning to school leaders and teachers in the Atlanta

and Augusta metropolitan areas. Her research interests include (a) examining the ways districts provide mentoring and support for early career administrators, (b) women in school leadership, (c) leadership and urban small school reform, (d) effective university and district partnerships, and (e) leadership development. She has been published in journals including Journal of School Leadership, Teachers College Record, Leadership and Policy in Schools, Journal of Educational Administration, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and Urban Education.
