2021 Call for Nominations – Scholars

2021 Call for Nomination – Scholars

Nominations Due by July 9, 2021

The Award

The UCEA Barbara L. Jackson Scholars Network Advisory Board is calling for nominees for students for the 2021-2023 Jackson Scholars cohort. The program, now in its 17th year, has over 300 alumni. Nominators are encouraged to nominate doctoral students who are completing their 2nd year of their programs. Nominating institutions agree to a financial obligation of no less than $2,000 per year for each Scholar to cover registration, travel, lodging, and meals to attend two UCEA Conventions and two AERA Annual Meetings [Note: costs may vary this year again because of virtual/hybrid options]

The Jackson Scholars Network develops and supports promising doctoral students of color for the professoriate in the field of educational leadership and policy. In the structured mentoring program feature, Scholars are matched with experienced faculty mentors who provide guidance in professional development, a model for students to reference when assuming mentor roles, and opportunities for networking. Mentors may also serve as a sounding board for Scholars as they navigate the phases of dissertation development, a research agenda, and publication in preparation for their entry into higher education. In the networking program feature Scholars participate in several opportunities to share and improve their research and access publication opportunities, all while becoming a member of professional community that includes other Scholars, Jackson Scholar alumni, and UCEA faculty.

The institutional benefits of participation in the Jackson Scholars Network include possible increased graduation rates or reduced time to degree for Jackson Scholars, and greater success in being hired as a result of the mentoring and training.
