Fergus has been Director of the Institute since 2000, having joined as a senior academic in 1996 after a lengthy education career spanning teaching, local administration, inspectorate roles and academic research and teaching. He commenced his career as a geography teacher, was promoted to departmental head shortly after appointment, moved to middle management as a lower school co-ordinator and then to the deputy headship of a comprehensive school. Following this phase, he moved to local education authorities as inspector and senior education officer, transferring to higher education in 1993. Prior to joining Lincoln University, he was at Leeds Metropolitan University. He is an active member of British and USA professional and research associations and organized the  BELMAS research conference in 2000. He was the instigator of one of the Institute’s main research areas – that of school business management (bursars) and also established the first programmes at Masters level for bursars. In his many other lives, he holds external examinerships, has been an OFSTED inspector, an INSET co-ordinator, a Masters degree programme leader and is an experienced yachtsman.
