Educational Administration Quarterly

           Jackson Scholars and mentors who are interested in submitting proposals for the special issue of Educational Administration Quarterly should plan to attend an information session on Friday, November 16, 5:15-5:45 p.m., Aspen Room.

            The Barbara L. Jackson Scholars Program honors Dr. Jackson, a professor and leading scholar, for her contributions to the field of educational leadership/school administration. The Barbara L. Jackson Scholars Program provides mentoring and career development opportunities to outstanding students of color who intend to enter the professorate.

            One purpose of the Jackson Scholars program is to mentor doctoral students in the norms of publishing in academic outlets such as journals, books, etc. which are essential for promotion and tenure in research institutions. To facilitate this effort, the Educational Administration Quarterly is sponsoring a special issue in which Jackson scholars are authors.

            Consistent with the purpose and focus of EAQ, this special issue will include up to five articles and 25-35 pages in length that are related to various topics on leadership and educational organizations (K12 and Higher Education) written by a Jackson Scholar(s) or a Jackson Scholar(s) and her/his mentor. Articles may be theoretical/conceptual or empirical, drawing on quantitative or qualitative methods. Consistent with the purpose and focus of EAQ, journal articles must address issues related to leadership and educational organizations (K12 or Higher Education). Final manuscripts will be accepted pending external review and acceptance by the editorial team.

Below are the criteria for submitting a proposal:

  1. Must be authored or co-authored by a Jackson Scholar(s).  If co-authored with a faculty mentor or senior colleague, the Jackson Scholar(s) must be the lead author(s). 
  2. Proposals should be no more than three single-spaced pages in length.
  3. Proposal must submitted by January 7, 2008 and must include the following:

    1. Names, institutional affiliations and contact information for authors.
    2. Statement of study purpose, research questions, rationale and justification
    3. Description of theoretical or conceptual framework guiding study
    4. If the proposed study is an empirical piece of research, a description of study design and methods, including data sources, data collection and data analysis techniques and standards of rigor.
    5. Summary of data findings/results
    6. Discussion and implications of findings for literature and policy or practice


  4. Send proposals electronically to January 7, 2008 to eaq@utah.edu E-mails should also identify the submission as a proposal for the Jackson Scholar Special Issue of EAQ

Proposals will be selected on the basis of the assessed quality and fit with the focus of EAQ.  Proposals accepted for inclusion must then be submitted as full manuscripts consistent with EAQ guidelines (see: www.sagepub.com/journalsProdManSub.nav?prodId=Journal200854).

The following is the timeline for the special issue:

1. November 2007    Call for proposals distributed to Jackson Scholars and mentors
2. January 7, 2008 Written proposal due
3. March 1, 2008 Submitters will be notified of preliminary acceptance of proposals, and will receive further instructions regarding submission of manuscripts. Manuscripts will be accepted pending external review and acceptance by the editorial board.
4. July 1, 2008 Manuscripts due
5. September 30, 2008 Manuscripts returned to authors for revisions
6. November 17, 2008  Revised manuscripts due
7. Summer or Fall 2009 Tentative earliest publication date.
