Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, & Queer Resources
for Educational Leadership Programs
This page provides selected teaching resources for Educational Leadership programs and faculty seeking to help principal candidates and other educational leaders create safe and inclusive schools for LGBTIQ persons. LGBTIQ experience in education must be contextualized as part of a multiplicity of intersecting identities and life experiences that are related to educational leadership for social justice. In this light, educational leadership for LGBTIQ equity also supports educational resources for equity across race, gender, socio-economic status, ability, language, belief system, and other forms of difference.
For more information on these resources or on the LGBTIQ Equity Audit Survey regarding principal preparation programs in UCEA member institutions, please contact Dr. Colleen A. Capper, University of Wisconsin – Madison (capper@education.wisc.edu), or
Dr. Michael P. O’Malley, Texas State University – San Marcos (mo20@txstate.edu).
“Only one-third of secondary school principals say that a lesbian, gay or bisexual student would feel very safe at their school and only one-quarter say that a transgender student would feel very safe … These findings are particularly troubling given that previous research shows that students and teachers report that sexual orientation and gender identity/expression are among the most common reasons why students are victimized at school and principals themselves believe that LGBT students feel less safe at school than other students.” –
