The David L Clark Seminar >> The Nomination Process
Each year, students are chosen to participate in the seminar through a rigorous selection process: first, they are nominated as candidates by their department chair or dean; second, they develop a detailed research proposal which outlines salient features of their study; finally, the proposals are blind reviewed by members of the planning committee, which selects the forty highest-ranking nominees.
Each university may nominate up to two students. Please compile a nomination packet (nomination form, abstract of student research, and statement of proposed research) for each nominee and complete them online (statement of research is emailed to ucea@virginia.edu) no later than November 1, 2011. All nomination packet forms are available on the UCEA website. We expect to extend invitations to 40 students by the middle of December. If you have any questions, please call (434) 243-1041.
The Nomination Packet
To be processed, each student's packet should contain 1) nomination form, 2) statement of nomination, 3) abstract of student's research project, and 4) a two-page summary of proposed research to UCEA. Nominating institutions MUST indicate the institutions commitment to provide financial assistance to supplement the nominee's expenses on the nomination form.
The student's statement of research should be no more than two (2) single-spaced pages and should outline the problem he or she is pursuing or plan to pursue in their dissertation research, its intended contribution to theory and practice, specific research questions, and study procedures. The statement of proposed research should be devoid of any reference to the nominee's name and/or institution. The statement is forwarded to NGSRSEA reviewers during the selection process.
