Who We Are

Who We Are

Our member faculty and deans come from different states and regions, yet we share the same goals of building knowledge for the field and providing quality preparation and lifelong learning experiences for school and school system leaders. Our collective wisdom, expertise, and research create the body of knowledge for our profession. In UCEA you will always find resources and colleagues who are committed to providing the learning experiences, professional knowledge, and research that leaders need to address some of schools’ most difficult challenges. Together, UCEA members shape the future of our profession.

Importantly, the UCEA community and influence extend far beyond our member universities. Because our members prepare future leaders for schools and school systems, our community extends into districts, schools, and classrooms—the very spaces where children learn and grow. Additionally, UCEA partners with various national networks of educational administration organizations dedicated to enhancing the field.

Equity Statement

With respect for the diversity that comprises our community and acknowledging systems of power that do not grant access equally, we recognize that equity is crucial to the long-term viability of the organization and the educational leadership profession.

We design and implement policies and practices that ensure that all people—including but not limited to those who have been historically marginalized and underrepresented based on race/ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, LGBTQIA+, socioeconomic status, geography, place, citizenship status, or religion—are both represented and treated fairly. In particular, we seek to examine and improve our practices and advance the rights of those who have been marginalized and underrepresented within the organization.

UCEA strives to create a thriving community where all members of the organization are included, respected, and nurtured. We actively address the hierarchies embedded in higher education structures and our own membership. We work in ways that improve access to opportunities, programs, financial resources, and information is equitable.

Although our member faculty and deans come from different states and regions, we all share the same goals of building knowledge for the field and providing quality preparation and lifelong learning experiences for school and school system leaders. Our collective wisdom, expertise, and research create the body of knowledge for our profession. In UCEA you will always find resources and colleagues who are committed to providing the learning experiences, professional knowledge and research that leaders need. Together, UCEA members shape the future of our profession.

More than 60 years ago, the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) was founded by 15 universities, the Kellogg Foundation, and the regional Centers for Educational Administration, all of whom recognized the need for inter-university collaboration to build a knowledge base of research and effective practice for the field of educational administration. The organization has a rich history. As the years passed, the organization grew. Today, UCEA has become a collective of top research institutions with programs in educational leadership and policy and the leading professional organization for professors of educational leadership and policy.

Importantly, the UCEA community and influence expands far beyond our member universities. Because our members prepare future leaders for schools and school systems, our community extends into districts, schools, and classrooms — the very spaces where children learn and grow. UCEA is also a part of several national networks of educational administration organizations focused on improving the field, including the National Policy Board for Educational Administration.
